IMG_Cavel_0Edith (Louisa) Cavell (1865-1915), an English nurse became a popular heroine of World War 1. She was arrested for helping about 200 allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium and was subsequently court-martialled, found guilty of treason and sentenced to death. Despite international pressure for mercy, she was shot by a German firing squad. Her execution received worldwide condemnation and extensive press coverage.
